Don’t bug me

I have had many conversations with people trying to figure out why God made some bugs.  It’s not hard to see that some bugs have a purpose. Think about the fly. It clearly plays a role in the disposal of decaying flesh.  Maggots, which are baby flies, (I hope you are not eating breakfast) do their job really well.  They look really nasty, but they are doing what they were created to do.

I have wondered for a long time why some bugs are attracted to lights at night. Scientists still don’t know for sure why some bugs are attracted to light while other bugs run away from light.  Some scientists seem to think that bugs that are attracted to light because they think the light is the sun or moon.

Have you ever had a person in your life that was like one of those light-loving bugs? I did. I had a friend named Larry in junior high school that was also my neighbor. Well…I didn’t think of him as a friend, he was more like a bug.  Larry would follow me around every chance he had and would stop by our house just about every day after school. I’m not proud to say that I was somewhat mean to Larry. I really treated him like a bug.  I was always trying to get rid of him, but deep down inside, I felt like I was supposed to talk to Larry about my relationship with God.

I never got a chance to have that talk. One day as I was waiting on my porch for him to make his daily visit, my mom came to the door and asked me to come inside. She told me that Larry had been shot and killed.  I decided right then and there that I would spend the rest of my life trying to help teenagers, and that I would do my best to treat everyone with honor and respect.

Hamsight: thank God for the bugs around you
